I’m Soma Bhattacharjee, born and brought up in Haldia. My story with fashion, however, began long before I ever imagined it could become a business.
As a little girl, I grew up with my younger sister, our dolls, and a colourful plastic kitchen set. Ironically, I was never particularly interested in playing with the dolls. What caught my eye were their beautiful, colourful outfits, the colours, the designs, and the little details. Looking back, perhaps that was the first time I unknowingly discovered my love for fashion.
Life, though, had its own plans. I lost my father when I was just five. My mother worked tirelessly to make ends meet, while my sister and I focused on our education. Somewhere between school, growing up and everyday life, I found my own little creative world.
I began designing and stitching clothes for my sister and myself. Soon, friends and neighbours started noticing my creations and asking me to make dresses for them too. Their appreciation gave me the confidence to keep learning and experimenting. I may not have a certificate from a fashion or designing school to put on my wall, but I firmly believe that passion, curiosity and self learning can be powerful teachers too.
My love for sarees came much later, and perhaps, more naturally.
A saree is something I grew up seeing my mother wear every single day. It is familiar, graceful and deeply emotional for me. It carries memories of home, of my mother, of Bengali culture and of the place where I was born. It is not just a piece of clothing. For me, it is a beautiful connection to my roots.
That love for traditional clothing gradually became a part of the creations I wanted to offer. Today, our collection reflects the charm of ethnic wear South Kolkata women can connect with, bringing together Indian traditions, beautiful fabrics and thoughtful designs.
And somewhere along the way, a tiny business seed was planted.
I named it Soma’s Creations because everything we create carries a little touch of me, my choices, my imagination and my love for beautiful things.
But, like every small business, Soma’s Creations was not built in a day. Behind every saree and every creation are countless sleepless nights, endless learning, mistakes, experiments and, most importantly, the immeasurable efforts of the weavers, artisans and tailors who bring my ideas to life.
